VHI Research Associate Vlado Kmec awarded the European Award for European Security and Defence for his research and his European engagement.

Dr Vladimir Kmec, VHI research associate, was awarded special award for European Security and Defence in the 2018 European Award for Citizenship, Security and Defence for his research project on the European Union’s approach to peacebuilding within Common Security and Defence Policy operations and missions, and for his European engagement.

The price was presented to Dr Kmec by Dr Karl von Wogau, former Member of the Bundestag, and by Mr Rainer Dornseifer, adviser of Mr Axel E. Fischer, Member of the Bundestag, at a ceremony held during the Berlin Security Conference on Tuesday 27 November 2018. In addition, Dr Kmec received the Medal of the President of the French Republic from Brigadier Nicholas Richoux, the French Naval Attaché in Berlin.

The European Award for Citizenship, Security and Defence rewards outstanding efforts towards promoting European citizenship and European security and defence awareness. The prize was first awarded in 2011, under the High Patronage of the President of the European Council, Mr Herman van Rompuy.

The prize is organised annually by the association “Civisme Défense Armées Nation” (CiDAN), together with the European Interparliamentary Security and Defence Association, whose President is Robert Walter, the former MP and the former chairman of the WEU Assembly. The jury consists of members of the European Parliament and European Military Staff representatives.
