Von Hügel Institute

for Critical Catholic Inquiry

The Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry (VHI) was established in 1987 to undertake interdisciplinary research inspired by Catholic thought and culture. We are pursuing this vision vigorously, harnessing the resources of the catholic Christian traditions of philosophy, theology and ethics for a better shared future, linking up with the broadest range of academic disciplines within the University of Cambridge and beyond, to address global contemporary challenges. We do this as an integral part of St Edmund's College, one of the most vibrant, international and diverse communities in the University.

The VHI encourages thinking in the round, seeing all of reality through its underlying unity, in the etymological sense of catholic. This enables fresh conversations and new directions, all geared towards the common good.

The VHI thrives on analysis, imagination and transformation, and seeks the good, the true, and the beautiful wherever they are to be found. Informed by vibrant interdisciplinarity, our research, events and publications have wide-ranging impact in the academy and across many constituencies in society.

Welcome to the VHI!
