The Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry is delighted to announced that VHI Research Associate Dr Flavio Comim has been appointed new Dean of the IQS School of Management at University Ramon Llull in Barcelona.

Dr Comim holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge (1998), a Postdoc from Harvard University (2012), and an MPhil in Economics from the University of Cambridge (1994), among other degrees. In his academic work, he has lectured at the University of Cambridge for over 15 years and supervised over 20 doctoral theses. Dr Comim specializes in Development Economics, his research focusing on human development, sustainable development, capability approach and economics of poverty. He has edited several books on the capability approach and has worked as a Senior Economist for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Brazil and has served as a consultant to other UN agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He coordinated the 2014 Panama Human Development Report on Children and the Youth in Panama, and the 2010 Brazil Human Development report on Human Values. He is also a referee for the European Research Council and the Templeton Foundation.

Dr Comim first joined St Edmund's College in 1993 as an economics student and has maintained an uninterrupted relationship with the College in different capacities, acting as a Fellow, College Lecturer, and Director of Studies in Economics for many years, as well as Director of the Capability and Sustainability Centre at the Von Hügel Institute until 2008. Currently at the VHI, Dr Comim is leading a project on ‘Development as Common Good,’ which explores the limitations of current development discourses and puts forward a framework for thinking of common good as a social objective. They include several research activities, such as reading groups and the annual Cambridge Capability Conferences (Centre of Development Studies), and publications.

Among other current positions, the new Dean of the IQS School of Management has been the Head of the IQS Department of Ethics and Christian Thought at IQS for the past three years. He is also an elected member of the Human Development and Capability Association and, in addition, has been a Senior Advisor for the “Leaving No One Behind” Programme aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda and the coordinator of the IQS team that advised the Government of Catalonia in drafting its 2023-2026 Plan for International Cooperation.
