Von Hügel Institute

for Critical Catholic Inquiry

University of Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., has been elected an Honorary Fellow of St Edmund’s College, in recognition of his significant contributions to higher education, as well as for his role in developing the partnership between St Edmund’s and Notre Dame.

Fr Jenkins, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, was elected the 17th president of the University of Notre Dame in 2005. As president of Notre Dame, Fr Jenkins has contributed significantly to wider debates in higher education and society, especially in civil discourse. His achievements are characterised by a strong commitment to building common ground against increasingly widespread polarization.

“I am humbled to accept this Honorary Fellowship,” Fr Jenkins said. “We are very proud of the partnership we’ve developed with St Edmund’s and believe that it has the potential to be a significant presence in higher education and beyond.”

In March 2022, Fr Jenkins and Catherine Arnold OBE, the Master of St Edmund’s College, signed a memorandum of understanding, for the development of a collaboration that features research and outreach opportunities for academics, students, and administrators of both institutions.

The MOU has already provided the basis for both scholarship and internship programmes, and joint research projects in collaboration with the Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry.
