Biography
Thana joined the Von Hügel Institute as Research Associate in 2014. She is an associate professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile School of Government, and an associate researcher at the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights, where she directs the Dignity and Equity in Women’s Health Issues initiative.
Thana holds a PhD in Law from the University of Oxford and a Master's degree in International Law from the University of Sao Paulo. She published The Global Health Crisis: Ethical Responsibilities (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and co-edited Philosophical Foundations of Medical Law (Oxford University Press, 2019). Between 2020 and 2021, she was a fellow at the Fung Global Program, at the Institute of International and Regional Studies at Princeton University , where she developed her new book entitled The Rule of Love: Love-Based Governance for Global Health.
Research
Global bioethics, international human rights, legal theory and moral philosophy, with particular interests in Natural Law, Virtue Ethics, global health law, global health governance and the human right to health. At the VHI Thana has been working on a project focused on the definition of ill-health and well being and on end of life, disability and mental illness.
