Von Hügel Institute

for Critical Catholic Inquiry

A 2-day workshop hosted by the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS), in collaboration with the Von Hügel Institute and the Cambridge Migration Research Network

The workshop will discuss refugee and migration politics with focus on identity, politics, religion, nation, racism, political attitudes and gender in the framework of European national policies. The workshop starts from the assumption that the worldwide refugee crisis signifies a historical watershed; it concerns European identity and politics in a new way. The EU member countries are divided by disagreement upon migration and refugee politics, whether in political, economic, social or moral terms. This raises the question of how the recent developments, debates and reactions in Europe can be understood. The aim of the workshop is to carve out key characteristic and conditions of this problem, and to identify central areas of necessary research with regard to the politics of integration and identity. The programme also features discussion about the links between the UK referendum on EU membership and migration issues and refugee crisis.
