Von Hügel Institute

for Critical Catholic Inquiry

Joint seminar organised by the Woolf Institute and the Von Hügel Institute for critical catholic inquiry

Who are the People of God?

Fr. Etienne Emmanuel Vetö, Director, Cardinal Bea Centre for Judaic Studies, Pontifical Gregorian University

The talk will explore the following questions:

  • Are the People of God Israel and/or the Church?
  • How can the Church say that the promises made to Israel are irrevocable AND that she is the 'new people of God'?
  • If Israel is the one People of God, then Christians need to seriously reconsider ecclesiology.
  • However, there is a question also to Jews: what does it mean to be chosen by God? If Israel is the Chosen People, what is its mission? And is it faithfully accomplishing its mission to make known the God of Israel to the Nations?

Speaker:

Fr Etienne Emmanuel Vetö, Director Cardinal Bea Centre for Judaic Studies Pontifical Gregorian University.

Respondents:

Dr Philip McCosker, Director, Von Hügel Institute
