On Friday 9 February Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, delivered the 2018 Annual Von Hügel Lecture on the topic: ‘Pope Francis’ Revolution of Mercy: Amoris Laetitia as a New Paradigm of Catholicity’. In the lecture the Cardinal discussed six hermeneutical principles for reading Amoris Laetitia which he argue lead to a refreshed basis and framework for the Church’s pastoral ministry to families and those in relationships.
Cardinal Blase J. Cupich is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and was the personal choice of Pope Francis to succeed Francis Cardinal George OMI as Archbishop of Chicago in September 2014. He was previously bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Spokane, Washington. He is a member of the Vatican Congregations for Bishops and Catholic Education. He completed his studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington with a doctorate in sacramental theology. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on 19 November 2016. He was a prominent voice at the Synod on the Family which informed Pope Francis’ exhortation, Amoris Laetitia.
