The VHI welcomes three new Research Associates

The VHI is delighted to welcome Professor Philip Sheldrake as a new Senior Research Associate, and Professor Luigi Gioia OSB and Dr Elif Çetin as new Research Associates, beginning 1st October 2016.


Philip Sheldrake is a theologian and religious historian with particular expertise in the area of spirituality. He has also been involved in urban studies and with urban professionals. His recent books include A Spiritual City: Theology, Spirituality, and the Urban (Wiley-Blackwell, 2014).

Luigi Gioia is Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at the Pontifical University of S. Anselmo in Rome. He is the Academic Director of a project on Leadership and the Rule of Saint Benedict resulting from a cooperation between the University of S. Anselmo in Rome and the Faculty of Business and Management of the University of S. Gallen in Switzerland. He recently published The Theological Epistemology of Augustine’s De Trinitate (Oxford University Press, 2016).

Elif Çetin completed her PhD in the Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge in 2014. During the academic year 2015-16, Elif was a postdoctoral research assistant at the VHI, working with Sara Silvestri on the research project 'Migration, Religion and Catholic Social Thought'. Elif has previously worked as an associate expert in The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), and as a researcher on the ‘Four Decades of European Union Politics Towards Turkey’ project, while being based at The Netherlands Institute of International Relations, Clingendael (The Hague).
