Von Hügel Institute

for Critical Catholic Inquiry

The Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry has a 30-year track record as a leading interdisciplinary research institute in the University of Cambridge, developing the critical resources of a catholic worldview for a better shared future.

Our programme of seminars, lectures, conferences, workshops, publications, research networks, international collaborations and educational events has lasting impact around the world.

Our work mines the theological, philosophical and ethical traditions of the world’s largest and most global religious tradition to address the pressing issues of our world and its future.

Our research is anchored in a catholic worldview: seeing everything in its diversity and underlying unity, seeking a universal joined-up outlook such as inspired the foundation of universities. We believe that catholic thinking is a powerful critical resource for fostering and inspiring analysis, imagination and transformation in the academy, in the church and in the world.

Our research community is international, interdisciplinary and intergenerational, bringing together leading thinkers and practitioners of today with leaders of tomorrow to address crucial contemporary issues, such as migration, patenting of genetic material, understandings of health and ill-health, human dignity, gender and sexuality, inter-religious relations and the role of the arts in human flourishing.
