Von Hügel Institute

for Critical Catholic Inquiry

Thanks to the generosity of the CAMMIGRES, the ‘Religion, Politics, Migration’ postgraduate group (co-ordinated by Dr Elif Çetin and Vlado Kmec) and Cambridge Muslims in Europe Postgraduate Forum held a successful postgraduate seminar at St Edmund’s College on Monday 22nd June.

Interdisciplinary Religion, Politics, Migration postgraduate seminarThe day’s theme was ‘Religion, Politics, Migration’, and the seminar featured presentations across four panels. Doctoral and post-doctoral participants hailed from a variety of academic disciplines and faculties, including Politics and International Studies, Divinity, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, History, and Anthropology. Designed to offer a supportive and informal space of discussion, the event included accounts of nearly completed projects, research plans in their early stages, and exploratory pieces tangential to students’ main projects.

The range of presentations was broad, from Catholic Social Thought in Migration and Asylum Policy, to Humanitarians under ISIS, and Intercultural Engagement of Young People of Migration Background in Ireland and Germany. There was also an interesting pairing of two ethnographic accounts of contemporary Muslim Festivals in France and Britain.

Following the day's fruitful discussions, the organisers, Dr Elif Çetin, Vlado Kmec, Margot Dazey, and Chris Moses, suggested that a natural next step would be to expand to a larger conference next year.

The day's schedule can be downloaded here.
