Flavio Comim is a development economist. He is a Associate Professor of Economy at the Ramon Llull University, in Barcelona, where he is a Professor of Economy, and an Affiliated Lecturer in Human Development in the Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge. He was previously an Anjunct Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (FURGS), Brazil. Flavio is a VHI Research Associate and Visiting Fellow of St Edmund’s College, where he has been a Fellow, College Lecturer and Director of Studies in Economics for many years, as well as Director of the Capability and Sustainability Centre at Von Hügel Institute until 2008.

He has worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Brazil and has served as a consultant to other UN agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Research

Flavio's teaching focuses on human development, sustainable development, capability approach and economics of poverty. At the VHI he leads a series of research activities exploring Development as Common Good and he has co-edited several books on the capability approach. He has worked as a Senior Economist for UNDP and as a consultant for UNEP, FAO, WHO, and UNESCO. He coordinated the 2014 Panama Human Development Report on Children and the Youth in Panama, and the 2010 Brazil Human Development report on Human Values. He is also a referee for the European Research Council and the Templeton Foundation.

Among other positions, Dr Comim has been has been the Head of the IQS Department of Ethics and Christian Thought at IQS for the past three years, and he is an elected member of the Human Development and Capability Association. In addition, he has been a Senior Advisor for the “Leaving No One Behind” Programme aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda and the coordinator of the IQS team that advised the Government of Catalonia in drafting its 2023-2026 Plan for International Cooperation.
